Shinshu Mars

Nestled between Japan’s majestic Southern Alps and the towering Central Alps, Shinshu Mars Distillery holds the title of Japan’s highest whisky distillery, perched at just over 2,600 feet above sea level. This idyllic alpine setting, in Miyada village in southern Nagano Prefecture, was chosen for its cool temperatures, which slow the whisky maturation process, and its abundant aquifers fed by soft, granite-filtered snowmelt—key to crafting whiskies of exceptional smoothness and complexity.

The Hombo family, with a distilling legacy spanning over a century, began producing whisky in 1949 at their original site in Kagoshima Prefecture, on Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost island. Until 1984, they made Japan’s southernmost whisky before relocating the distillery to Miyada village, embracing the benefits of the alpine environment.

Today, Shinshu Mars whiskies are celebrated for their elegant and intricate flavors, a testament to the distillery’s rich history and the perfect harmony of nature and craftsmanship.
