Togouchi Aged Japanese Whisky is a distinctive brand produced by Chugoku Jozo, a Japanese spirits and sake company founded in 1918. Located in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, the company is known for its innovative approach to whisky production, blending, and aging. What sets Togouchi’s aged whiskies apart is its unique maturation process, which takes place in a tunnel instead of a traditional warehouse, infusing it with a distinctive character that sets it apart.
Unlike many traditional whisky producers that age their whiskies in warehouses, Chugoku Jozo ages Togouchi whisky in a disused railway tunnel. This tunnel, located in the former town of Togouchi (now part of Akiota), offers stable year-round conditions with a consistent temperature of around 14°C and 80% humidity. This controlled environment ensures smooth and balanced aging, giving Togouchi its distinctive character.
Togouchi whisky is crafted by blending imported malt and grain whiskies from Scotland and Canada, which are then aged and blended in Japan. This blending process reflects a fusion of Japanese precision and international influences, creating a unique profile that combines smoothness, depth, and complexity, though the exact tasting notes may vary.
Note: As of March 2021, Chugoku Jozo Co., Ltd. officially became SAKURAO Brewery and Distillery Co., Ltd. and mainly produces no-age-statement Togouchi Blended whiskies, such as Togouchi Premium and Cask Finish series, as well as Sakurao and Togouchi single malt range.
