Taketsuru

Masataka Taketsuru is a legendary figure in the world of whisky, often referred to as the "Father of Japanese Whisky." Born in 1894 in Takehara, Japan, Taketsuru is celebrated for his pivotal role in establishing the Japanese whisky industry.

In the early 20th century, Taketsuru traveled to Scotland, where he studied organic chemistry and learned the craft of whisky making. He worked in several Scottish distilleries, gaining invaluable experience and knowledge. His time in Scotland also influenced his future endeavors significantly.

Upon returning to Japan, Taketsuru brought with him the techniques and insights he had acquired. He played an instrumental role in setting up the country's first whisky distillery, Yamazaki, for Suntory. However, his vision of whisky making led him to establish his own distillery, Yoichi, in Hokkaido in 1934, under the company he founded, Dainipponkaju, which later became Nikka Whisky.

Taketsuru's dedication to traditional Scottish whisky-making methods, adapted to Japanese conditions, laid the groundwork for the unique and highly regarded Japanese whisky style. His legacy lives on through Nikka Whisky, which remains a prominent name in the industry, and through the Taketsuru line of whiskies, named in his honor. These whiskies are celebrated for their quality and are a fitting tribute to Taketsuru's enduring impact on the whisky world.
